In May of 1993 we purchased MuMu when we were living on the garden island of Kauai.
I was driving home from my waiter job on the south shore when I saw this beautiful rust free FJ40 parked in a driveway in Lihue. Immediately told Mary “I have to buy this LandCruiser,  I really have wanted to own one since high school! “.

Turns out the original owner 'Calvin Tokita' used the FJ40 for hunting on the west side of Kauai, which accounted for the 23,000 miles.
Unfortunately Calvin was getting older and it was getting harder and harder for him to drive the '40 so he was selling it to purchase a Jeep Grand Cherokee. (Ouch).

Original owners manual

The FJ40 was in beautiful condition complete with the original spare tire. All documentation was still intact. I offered him $6000 and he accepted it. I drove MuMu away from his house in Lihue and I could see that his eyes were teary. I assured him that I would take good care of his special 4X4.

Bob and baby Kaiel East Side of Kauai

We ended up leaving Kauai the following September so I could return to school. The remaining time on Kauai was spent driving on the secluded beaches searching for waves. I had never driven a Land Cruiser before and was AMAZED at how easy it handled driving on the soft sand. Previously we had been driving a lifted 1985 4Runner, which performed pretty well, but the Land Cruiser just felt like this is what it was made for.

Kaiel's first ride from the hospital to our home in Wailua was in an FJ40.

Kaiel’s first hiking trip on the East Side of Kauai. I think he is a couple weeks old here.
